If food in Gumi might be new to some of you, then food in Andong might be slightly a little bit familiar to you, especially if you came down to Seoul a lot, then you’ll definitely ever heard Andong Jjim Dakk which is a Korean style stewed chicken in brown soya sauce, it taste slightly a little bit spicy (a pepper spicy instead of a chili spicy) with a bunch of glass noodle and chops of potatoes and carrots. It tastes more like a Chinese cuisine instead of Korean cuisine to me, since my mom cooks similar stuff (Chinese style soya sauce stew chicken) a lot back in my home town. Still, since it tastes so similar to my mom’s cooking, Andong Jjim Dakk can be counted as one of my favorite food, especially everytime I felt like missing home.
This time I tried out Andong Jjim Dakk which is being featured in variety show ‘2 Days 1 Night’ (a show which has been suspended few days ago due to the Jeong Jun Yeong’s sex scandal and Cha Tae Hyun and Kim Jun Ho’s gambling scandal), and honestly speaking I was kind of excited and hoped that it’ll taste slightly different from what I’ve always had in Seoul.
And it comes out just like what I’ve had in Seoul, and it tastes just the same, and costs the same. So conclusion is, if you plan to come down to Andong just to have an original Andong Jjim Dakk, just cancel your plan and better have it back in Seoul, since there’s no difference at all. The only difference is here you have to eat inside a small restaurant with small table with a very uncomfortable seating.
Next up is the most famous bakery in Andong, which is called Mammoth Bakery (you’ll be hearing you Korean friend pronounce it as “마모스 Mamose”). It is located near to the local traditional market which sells the Andong Jjim Dakk above. And if you’re a first comer, then you should try their Cheese Cream Bread, since that’s they’re no. 1 steady seller. You’ll see lots of local queuing in the cashier to order this bread every time it’s the time for the bread to come out, so you better come early or else you won’t get it.
So, I bought 5 bread, few for dessert, and some to take away just in case I was hungry when I were in my hotel room. Number 1 is the traditional red bean mochi, the mochi tasted standard I must say, the skin is slightly a little bit too hard and less chewy for my taste, but the fillings taste really great, the red bean is not too sweet and yet not too bland. Number 2 is their most favorite cream cheese bread, so maybe I’ve had my hopes a little bit too high, it tastes good, the cream cheese is the perfect mix of sweet, salty and slightly buttery, but it’s not that good that it’ll make me to queue up the cashier just to have one. Number 3 is my personal favorite cherry custard danish, this one is my personal favorite, I love the taste of the cherry, and their custard is superb, meanwhile the danish is crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, just like how I’ve imagined it. I even came back here every now and then just to have this as my dessert during the travel. Number 4 is scone, I’m not really a scone person, but since this is being marked as one of their best seller, I decided to have a taste, and just like what I’ve thought, it’s not my style. If you’re a scone lover, then you’d like to try it and tell me whether they really taste that good. Number 5 is the custard cream bread, I confessed that I’m crazy about everything custard. LOLZ. Too bad though that this custard cream bread didn’t live up to my expectation. Doesn’t like the custard cream in the cherry custard danish, the custard cream in this bread didn’t blend in perfectly with the bread. The bread is hard and the custard is not sweet enough.
And again, when it comes to choosing the place to stay, I’ll always having a hard time to choose one. But based on my experience here, if you’re not looking a too luxurious hotel, then YAM Hotel which located around the Andong Culture Street (116-4 Dongbu-dong, Andong, Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea) is definitely the best choice. It’s just a few steps away from the shopping street, another few steps away to the local traditional market which sells lots of Andong Jjim Dakk, few steps away to Mammoth Bakery and some other locally famous restaurant, you have 24 hour convenient store down stair and a chicken and beer restaurant down stair which closed after midnight hours just in case you have a sudden craving for chicken and a glass of good beer. Again, don’t book through booking.com or agoda since it’ll cost you 77 dollar per night (crazy price) for a standard room, while it’ll only cost you KRW 50,000 (around 44 dollar) if you book directly on the spot or through Yanolja for the same room. The place is super clean and the room is spacious enough and they have a big shower room which is so comfortable. Minus point is that this places didn’t have an elevator, so if you’re bringing a big heavy luggage then you might want to consider having yourself staying in some other hotel. Since I traveled only with a cabin size carrier that time, this place is just perfect for me.
